Play Description: When novelist Charles Condomine hosts a séance as research for his next book, he inadvertently summons the ghost of his late first wife, Elvira. Mischievous and jealous, Elvira is determined to disrupt Charles's current marriage to his second wife, Ruth. As the supernatural chaos escalates, Charles finds himself caught between two wives — one living and one dead — leading to a series of comic misunderstandings and ghostly mishaps.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN:

NOTE:

- Ages are approximate - seeking actors who can believable play these ranges.

- All characters except Edith require an upper-class British (RP) dialect.

- Edith requires a lower-class British (or Cockney) dialect.

Charles Condomine

  • Description: A charming, witty, and somewhat cynical novelist. He is married to his second wife, Ruth, and invites a medium to conduct a séance as research for his new book. However, he inadvertently summons the ghost of his first wife, Elvira, leading to comedic and supernatural turmoil. British (RP) dialect required.
  • Age Range: 35-50

Ruth Condomine

  • Description: Charles's second wife, practical, sophisticated, and no-nonsense. She is initially skeptical of the supernatural but becomes increasingly frustrated and jealous when Elvira returns to haunt Charles. British (RP) dialect required.
  • Age Range: 30-45

Elvira Condomine

  • Description: The ghost of Charles’s first wife, mischievous, flirtatious, and dramatic. She enjoys causing trouble and attempts to reclaim Charles for herself from beyond the grave. British (RP) dialect required.
  • Age Range: 25-40 (appears youthful and ethereal as a ghost)

Madame Arcati

  • Description: An eccentric and enthusiastic medium who conducts the séance. She is somewhat dotty but deeply committed to her craft, unaware of how much havoc her powers can create. Often a scene-stealer with her grand mannerisms and oddball personality. British (RP) dialect required.
  • Age Range: 50-70

Dr. George Bradman

  • Description: A local doctor, rational and skeptical about the supernatural. He attends the séance mostly out of curiosity but remains unconvinced about its legitimacy. British (RP) dialect required.
  • Age Range: 40-60

Mrs. Violet Bradman

  • Description: Dr. Bradman’s wife, pleasant, friendly, and slightly gullible. She is excited about the séance and more willing than her husband to entertain the idea of spirits. British (RP) dialect required.
  • Age Range: 35-55

Edith

  • Description: The Condomines’ nervous and excitable maid. She is eager to please, often flustered, and plays a crucial part in the resolution of the play. Lower British (or Cockney) dialect required.
